Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to common F1 visa questions
What differentiates the F1 Visa from other student visas?
The F1 is the standard visa for full-time academic students at accredited colleges, universities, seminaries, conservatories, academic high schools, and language training programs. Unlike the M1 visa (vocational) or J1 visa (exchange), the F1 is specifically designed for degree-seeking students and offers the most flexibility regarding on-campus employment and post-graduation practical training (OPT).
How long am I permitted to remain in the U.S. on an F1 Visa?
F1 students are admitted for 'Duration of Status' (D/S), not a fixed date. This means you can stay as long as you maintain full-time enrollment and make normal progress toward your degree. Once your program ends (or your OPT expires), you have a 60-day 'grace period' to depart the U.S., transfer to another school, or change your visa status.
What are the rules for working while on an F1 Visa?
Employment is strictly regulated. During your first academic year, you may only work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week while school is in session (full-time during breaks). After one year, you may be eligible for off-campus employment through Curricular Practical Training (CPT) if it's integral to your curriculum, or Optional Practical Training (OPT) for 12 months (plus 24 months for STEM grads) after graduation.
What distinguishes the F1 Visa from the M1 Visa?
The key difference is the type of study. F1 is for academic or language training programs leading to a degree. M1 is for vocational or non-academic programs (like flight schools or culinary academies). F1 students have much more flexibility: they can transfer schools easily and have generous work options (OPT), whereas M1 students cannot change their field of study and have very limited practical training authorization.
What is the timeline for F1 Visa processing?
You can apply for your F1 visa up to 120 days before your program start date (as listed on your I-20). We recommend starting the process as soon as you receive your acceptance letter. While interview slots can fill up, our expedited service ensures you get an appointment quickly. After approval, you can enter the U.S. up to 30 days before your classes begin.
